What is a ductless mini-split?

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump system that needs no ductwork. An outdoor unit connects to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, each controlling its own zone — perfect for additions, older homes without ducts, and rooms that never feel right.

The Quick Answer

  • No ductwork required — great for additions and older homes.
  • Zoned comfort: control each room independently.
  • Heats and cools efficiently, including cold-climate models.
  • Quiet, compact, and efficient compared with window units or baseboard.

When a mini-split is the right call

Home additions, finished basements and attics, sunrooms, garages, and older homes with no ducts are all ideal candidates. So is any room that's always hotter or colder than the rest of the house.

Single vs multi-zone

One outdoor unit can serve a single room or multiple indoor heads across different zones. Multi-zone systems let you condition only the spaces you're using.

How it works

Outdoor unit + indoor heads

Refrigerant lines run through a small wall penetration from the outdoor compressor to each indoor head — no bulky ducts. Each head has its own thermostat for true zoning.

Efficiency and quiet operation

Variable-speed compressors ramp up and down to hold a steady temperature instead of blasting on and off, which means lower energy use and very quiet operation.

Watch out for

Wrong head placement or sizing

Poorly placed or oversized heads short cycle and disappoint. Proper load calculation and placement are what separate a great mini-split install from a frustrating one.

DIY refrigerant work

Mini-splits require proper line-set installation and evacuation. Cut-rate or DIY installs often leak refrigerant and void the warranty.

Common questions

Can a mini-split heat a whole house?
A multi-zone system can heat much of a home, but whole-home comfort usually combines mini-splits with a central system. We'll assess your layout and recommend the right mix.
Are mini-splits efficient in winter?
Cold-climate mini-splits heat efficiently well below freezing, making them a strong option for Minnesota additions and hard-to-heat rooms.
Do they require maintenance?
Yes — filters need regular cleaning and an annual professional check keeps them efficient and under warranty.
