Why this matters for your home
The heat exchanger is the metal chamber that separates combustion gases from the air you breathe while transferring heat between them. Your home's air flows over it and warms up; the exhaust stays sealed inside and vents safely outdoors.
A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into the airstream, which is why we inspect it on every furnace visit. If we find a crack on an older furnace we'll explain the risk plainly and never pressure you — but we won't sign off on running an unsafe unit.
