What size furnace or AC do I need?
The right size comes from a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's size, insulation, windows, layout, and our climate — not a square-footage rule of thumb or matching your old unit. Both oversizing and undersizing cause real comfort and efficiency problems.

Why 'bigger is better' is wrong
An oversized furnace or AC heats or cools too fast, shuts off, and repeats — short cycling that wastes energy, wears parts, and leaves rooms uneven and humid. Correct size beats big every time.

Furnace sizing (BTU)
Furnace output is measured in BTUs. The right number depends on heat loss calculated for your specific home — insulation, windows, air sealing, and Minnesota's design temperature all factor in.
AC / heat pump sizing (tons)
Cooling is measured in tons (12,000 BTU/hr each). Most homes need 2–5 tons, but only a load calculation tells you the right figure for your house.
